On August 29, 2019 United Way of St. Joseph County held their annual Alexis Coquillard Society Leadership Appreciation Event. The Alexis Coquillard Society is comprised of leaders who share a strong passion and ongoing commitment to making a difference in our community. These leaders generously give donations over $1,000 each year, allowing the continual progress of reducing barriers and providing better lives for those most in need. Each year, “The Ernie” Award is presented as well as an award for Community Impact Program of the Year and Company of the Year.

.

“The Ernie” award was established in 2011 to recognize Ernestine Morris Raclin and her passion demonstrated to the community. On behalf of United Way, locally and globally, we honor her everlasting legacy by presenting “The Ernie” award to exceptional leaders who demonstrate dedication to our community through outstanding achievements and hard work. This year, Todd and Stephanie Schurz were honored with this award. Todd began lending his voice to help garner support for United way in 1998 as the Campaign Chair. That year, Campaign raised $3.79M. Though never fond of the spotlight, Todd and Stephanie’s servant leadership and philanthropy are apparent in their modest nature and selfless giving.

.

The Community Impact Program of the Year was awarded to La Casa de Amistad for their English Language Learning programs. La Casa runs two distinct English Language Learning programs, one that helps individuals integrate in the community and one that helps individuals become United States citizens. To date, over 800 students have passed the test to become citizens.

.

This year United Way honored three companies: Mid-City Supply, McCormick & Company, Inc., and Steel Warehouse.

.

Mid-City Supply’s relationship with United Way started over 50 years ago. Since the year 2000, they have donated over $350,000 to local United Way organizations and have recently had 100% employee participation and a 42% increase in employee giving.

.

The McCormick & Company, Inc. partnership with the United Way dates to the beginning of the organization. A 59% participation increase shows their commitment to employee engagement in the community and giving back.

.

Steel Warehouse believes that giving back to the community is a civic duty and honor. With a 157% increase in participation and a 62% increase in employee giving, Steel Warehouse continues to make an impact in the community.

.

United Way is extremely grateful to all of their partners and leaders in the community. This event is a special time to recognize the great work being done by so many and a time to celebrate the future of tackling poverty together.
