Question: What is AmeriCorps?

AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in intensive service to address education, poverty, health, disaster relief, and other critical issues.

Accomplishments/Highlights:

•   AmeriCorps members last year mobilized 3.4 million community volunteers.

•   Educated, mentored or served more than 3.5 million disadvantaged youth nationally.

•   Since the program’s inception in 1994, more than 800,000 volunteers have provided more than 1.8 billion hours of service to their communities and country.

Service:

AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that connect over 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet community needs in six key areas: disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures, and veterans and military families. AmeriCorps’ members serve with more than 15,000 non-profits, public agencies, and community organizations.

The United Way of St. Joseph County AmeriCorps:

Our program places members at local nonprofit organizations in need of service. Qualified members help improve our community, gain valuable experience, and develop leadership skills. National Service programs are available to all, without regard to race, color, national origin, disability, age, sex, political affiliation, or, in most instances, religion. AmeriCorps and United Way of St. Joseph County are equal opportunity employers.
