PROGRAM INFORMATION

TRANSFORMATION MINISTRIES

DESCRIPTION: Academic Empowerment 2.5 Plus is a program that seeks to transform the hearts and minds of urban youth and their families. Seventy two adult mentors engage our students along with another 18 Team Leaders and 50 more regular volunteers that help with food, tutoring and special events. There are 9 focus areas/programs to reinforce and enhance academic and social/emotional learning. These include Study Tables, Small Groups, Family Style Meals, 1-on-1 Mentoring, Life Skills Training, Transformation 12:2, Post-Secondary Success Planning, Special Events/Field Trips and Employment Opportunities. 

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB 

DESCRIPTION: provide excellent academic enrichment programs to the children and families in the Mishawaka and South Bend community. 

SOUTH BEND HERITAGE FOUNDATION

DESCRIPTION: SBH’s Augustus F. Hawkins Literacy Program helps over 25 students on an annual basis by providing after-school literacy activities for students struggling with reading at grade level. The Literacy Program began in 2011 in response to the demand from local parents for a program to help with their children’s reading skills. The Literacy Program provides individualized homework help with reading related subjects, including vocabulary and spelling, and utilizes reading software and work modules that bolster in-class reading activities. Additionally, one-on-one reading opportunities with mentors is also provided to enhance pronunciation and build vocabulary skills. 

LOGAN COMMUNITY RESOURCES INC in collaboration with Reins of Life

DESCRIPTION: This new program combines therapeutic, social, and recreational opportunities for adolescents with autism. LOGAN, the leading provider of autism services in Michiana, and Reins of Life, the pre-eminent therapeutic horseback riding program in the same footprint, have created a partnership in which LOGAN adolescent clients will participate in the Reins of Life horseback riding program. 

LA CASA DE AMISTAD

DESCRIPTION: We know that here at La Casa we have a great after school program… but we can’t make the students come. We brainstormed and thought of ways that we could motivate this target group of students into coming to our youth program by including something fun that is of interest to them. Our proposed solution is to have something automotive based. If they want join in on the fun… they have to attend a certain percentage of our traditional youth program (Adelante – “Forward”), plus get good grades and behavior in school, in order to do the fun automotive stuff. We want to use their love of cars to get them involved in other services we know will help them succeed. 

CAMP FIRE RIVER BEND

DESCRIPTION: Youth who receive campership funding will be given scholarships to attend two weeks of summer camp at Camp Tannadoonah. All campers who attend camp live in cabins with 10-15 similarly-aged youth and 3-4 camp staff. They will have the opportunity to take part in all regular camp activities, including swimming, boating, fishing, nature, crafts, drama, dance, photography, archery, sports, cooking, science, robotics, and music. Each camper customizes his or her schedule based on his or her interests. These campers will also receive 45 minute reading sessions each weekday.

YWCA OF NORTH CENTRAL INDIANA

DESCRIPTION: The YWCA’s Children’s Services department addresses the needs of the child within the child’s family system, including physical, mental, emotional, and educational requirements for healthy growth and development. All the services for children are performed first through the approach of Trauma-Informed Care and educational programming in our childcare center for infants/toddlers and preschoolers is modeled after HighScope. HighScope is a research based high quality, developmentally based program, founded on a philosophy of “active participatory learning,” in which children and adults are engaged, interactive partners in the learning. Although many of our children receive services for 40-45 days,we start the process of preparing them for pre-school or kindergarten (age-appropriate). 

CATHOLIC CHARITIES

DESCRIPTION: ECHO Program is a long term case management program for pregnant and parenting youth and young adults to help address the barriers faced in graduating from high school or in some cases, completing a high school equivalency program. ECHO Program promotes high school completion as the first step in establishing a foundation for achieving long term self-sufficiency. Services provided include regular school visits, home visits, interaction with service providers, school personnel and family members as needed, goal tracking, college planning, positive support and encouragement, help accessing public benefits and community services. As a result of this support, students are more likely to graduate from high school.

FIVE STAR LIFE

DESCRIPTION: For over thirteen years, Five Star Life (FSL) has been led by Seth Maust. Seth has over twenty years of experience teaching and training volunteers and students. He has found that by injecting the FSL Core Values (respect, responsibility, integrity, sacrifice, and courage) into students’ lives through intentional teaching and mentoring, their attitudes and mindsets change. As their mindsets change, their grades begin to rise. As their grades continue to rise, their future begins, and doors are opened.

RESCUE INC. (HOPE MINISTRIES)

DESCRIPTION: Hope4Youth serves youth in grades K–12 who live at Hope Ministries with their families. These youth are served through mentoring, personal advocacy, tutoring, educational support and therapeutic services, social activities, summer activities, 21st Century Scholars, and youth leadership programming.

DESCRIPTION: The Nuestros Hijos (Our Children) Programs are comprised two different afterschool programs: Crece Conmigo (Grow With Me) and Adelante (Forward). Both programs provide direct academic support and one-on-one tutoring while also providing enriching experiences in the ways of culture and art, technology, leadership, and community exploration.

REINS OF LIFE, INC. in collaboration with South Bend Community School System

DESCRIPTION: Participants of the Reins of Life School Program (ROL-SB) will experience a wide variety of activities that are designed around daily themes, with emphasis on language arts and mathematics. By interacting with equines, participants will be encountering mind, body, and emotional impact within their lessons. Changing the environment and providing an alternative way of delivering objective material can bring greater understanding of educational concepts as well as boost motivation to learn them. Lessons will be planned to meet the needs of the participants based on their skill level and concepts needing met with cooperation from educators.

CENTER FOR THE HOMELESS

DESCRIPTION: A high-quality afterschool program that provides enrichment and skill building in academic, social, and emotional domains of functioning. In order to reach this goal, we have been utilizing the Indiana Afterschool Standards as our program development framework.

GREEN BRIDGE GROWERS

DESCRIPTION: GBG’s SEEDS Project will provide a pathway to youth success and complement existing programming with the following goals: 1) To establish a robust and well-trained “SEEDS Corps” of middle-school and high-school volunteers on the autism spectrum to assist in the development of both soft and hard skills transferable to meaningful work opportunities for autistic youth either at GBG or elsewhere in the community; 2) Engage in creative problem-solving and casework with our clientele to eliminate professional and personal barriers to employment, and foster access to transportation options, financial literacy, social skills development, health and wellness, and self-advocacy.

YMCA OF MICHIANA

DESCRIPTION: South Bend Summer Select will provide breakfast and lunch for students, educational learning, promote literacy skills, introduce and promote sport skills and physical activity, enhance and promote behavioral skills and mental/emotional support. This is a new collaborative effort combining community partners to minimize the summer learning loss through student engagement, promote a safe environment for kids, provide opportunity for children to be fed, wrap around services to families, and also provide/promote opportunities for families to gather and engage in their community in a positive manner.
