Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role for a Chief Advancement Officer in South Bend, IN, at United Way of St. Joseph County. The Chief Advancement Officer will be responsible for planned giving, annual giving, philanthropy, strategic planning, and budgeting. They will oversee fundraising initiatives, donor relations, and development strategies to support the organization's mission. This position drives all engagement with donors, grants organizations, and agencies and projects the United Way brand and mission to the entire community. You are expected to collaborate closely with the President and CEO, the Chief Operating Officer, and the Chief Financial Officer.

Qualifications

  • Planned Giving, Annual Giving, and Philanthropy skills

  • Experience in strategic planning and budgeting

  • Demonstrated success in fundraising and development efforts

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with donors and stakeholders

  • Knowledge of nonprofit financial management

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Nonprofit Management, or related field

  • Leadership and management experience.

  • Bachelors Degree

  • 3+ years work experience in fundraising

  • Weighted Evaluation: Cultural Fit (25%), Successful Fundraising/Development/Advancement Experience (25%), Executive Leadership Experience (20%), Communication Skills (15%), and Education (15%).

Responsibilities

1.1. Collaborate with the senior management team to create the organizational goals.

1.1.1. Carry out the organizational mission and goals defined by the President and CEO.

1.1.2. Set Mission Advancement goals and KPIs to achieve the company's vision and designing strategies for growth.

1.1.3. Provide the CEO with weekly Mission Advancement team updates. The updates should include all projects and appropriate personnel issues.

1.2. Develop and execute a diverse revenue plan to meet or exceed the annual revenue goals.

1.2.1. Develop and execute the United Way Annual Workplace Campaign.

1.2.2. Develop a grant roadmap and strategy to pursue diverse funding sources.

1.2.2.1. The grant targets include, but are not limited to, the federal government, state government, local government, major corporate foundations, major private foundations, local grant-givers, and United Way-related organizations.

1.2.2.2. The grant roadmap plan will reflect a pursuit of at least 3x of the annual grant revenue goals.

1.2.3. Pursue and capture new individual donors.

1.2.4. Pursue and capture new corporate donors.

1.2.5. Strategize and collaborate to create actions or programs of value that result in revenue.

1.2.6. Assess month-over-month and quarter-over-quarter performance and recommend changes to the revenue plan to improve the Probability of Success.

1.3. Communications

1.3.1. Manage the United Way and United Way of St. Joseph County brand.

1.3.2. Responsible for ensuring continuity of organizational messaging throughout the year.

1.3.2.4. Public announcements

1.3.2.5. Campaign theme

1.3.2.6. Special events

1.3.2.7. Other events include, but are not limited to, marketing campaigns, advertising campaigns, and crisis communications.

1.3.3. Responsible for the plan to communicate with targeted or all donors throughout the year utilizing various delivery methods: snail mail, email, social media, traditional media advertising, and collaboration with other partners or organizations.

1.4. Manage the Mission Advancement annual operating budget.

1.4.1. Coordinate with Finance for monthly reviews, and present financial performance to the CEO quarterly.

1.4.2. Provide recommendations to the CEO and Finance for reprogramming of line items within the Mission Advancement budget to higher priority line items within the Mission Advancement budget.

1.5. Management

1.5.1. Set Mission Advancement goals and KPIs to achieve the company's vision and designing strategies for growth.

1.5.2. Organize the Mission Advancement team to achieve the company’s vision and goals.

1.5.3. Manage the Mission Advancement team to maximize individual performance, team effectiveness, and efficiency.

1.5.4. Communicate with the Mission Advancement team weekly on the annual and current project plan status.

1.5.5. Ensure collaboration within the Mission Advancement team and throughout the organization that empowers and enables individual employees to exercise initiative.

1.5.6. Monitor and evaluate employee performance and ensure that tasks are being completed.

1.5.7. Collaborate on improvement plans and create opportunities for employees to develop their skills.

1.6. Leadership

1.6.1. Create and sustain a culture within Mission Advancement that aligns with the organization’s culture.

1.6.2. Motivate and encourage employees to excel at their duties and foster professional growth.

1.6.3. Periodically, host team-building activities for Mission Advancement personnel.

1.6.4. Hold employees accountable for performance and workplace behavior.

1.6.5. Boost team performance through strong and inclusive communications, and empathy

1.7. Other duties as assigned by the President and CEO.
